The tour is focused on buildings, but there are many homes of artists, politicians, scientists and writers to note along the way, and many stories of pioneering figures who started their careers in this particularly attractive part of London.Starting from Belsize Park tube, we begin with Wells Coates’s Isokon Flats, a significant historical landmark with a dramatic conservation story in the 1990s. The Isokon Gallery displays aspects of the project and the people involved, with a vivid sense of the period. On the route, we shall see 1930s Modernist houses in the Frognal area – one by Maxwell Fry, the other by Connell Ward & Lucas and further projects of the 1930s by Ernst Freud and Samuel & Harding finishing at Ernö Goldfinger’s terrace of three houses in Willow Road, viewing the exterior only.
