Established in 2000, VORA Arquitectura is a multi-disciplinary practice based in Barcelona, led by Pere Buil and Toni Riba. They have won numerous international awards for their work at various scales and they combine practice with teaching, curating and cultural activism.

From small, precise interventions in existing buildings through to large-scale urban transformations, their work betrays a critical eye and a voracious appetite for the pleasures and complexities of urban life.

In Catalan ‘vora’ means an edge or limit, such as the hem of a garment or a coastline. This suggestion of a liminal, or ‘between’ space, helps to situate the practice’s position somewhere on the borderline between the past and future and between the domestic and civic realms. Pere Buil has described the work of the practice as a dialog between audacity and melancholy; looking forward, critically, to what transformations are possible and yet simultaneously looking back to the past, of being aware of the presence of history and the value of collective memory.

This talk will take place at 7:00pm GMT on Thursday 10th February 2022 in London at the ACAVA Faroe Road Studios, just around the corner from the offices of Jonathan Tuckey Design.

Building on the Built

About Building on the Built is a programme of talks, hosted by Jonathan Tuckey Design, which aims to promote the topic of architectural work connected with existing structures and, more specifically, to look at work that might challenge the way in which work on existing structures is approached today. Building on the Built aims to focus on work that celebrates an alternative to pure architecture, work that is evolving, mongrel and collaborative with time. Previous speakers have included, Roz Barr Architects, McCollough Mulvin Architects, Henley Halebrown Architects, Office MMX and Slovenian practice Ambient and the author Fred Scott. In parallel to our programme of talks, we publish articles, texts and images on our website that act as an accompanying archive. The archive includes architectural projects, photographic investigations and other artistic responses to built work. We welcome submission ideas and possible collaborations.
