Empathy can be defined as "the ability to understand and share the feelings of another." As designers we have a responsibility to focus on the impact our cities, infrastructure and buildings have on us as human beings, both as individuals and as collective communities. We must respond to critical requirements that are influenced by the built environment such as mental health and wellbeing, connectivity and inclusion. This conversation will not only examine how different parts of the industry are responding to this, but will also review if designing with empathy goes far enough to respond to the global challenges we face.
