Prof. Jose Torero outlines the fundamental principles of a fire strategy; detailing the tools and methods available to designers of high rise buildings.

The seminar will describe the impact of the Building Safety Act (2022) on the engineering profession. The aim of the seminar is to empower and educate competent design professionals to deliver innovative designs that are fundamentally fire safe. Jose was one of the instructed experts on the Grenfell Public Inquiry and will use the Tower as an example to illustrate why there is nothing inherently ‘wrong’ with building materials; rather it is the competency of the professionals and the quality of the design system that determines life safety.

Professor José L. Torero is Professor Civil Engineering and Head of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at University College London. He works in the fields of fire safety, combustion, environmental remediation and sanitation where he specializes in complex environments such as developing nations, cities, novel architectures, critical infrastructure, aircraft and spacecraft.

The Engineering Club

About The Engineering Club was founded in 1987 to host events about the broad culture of engineering in an informal setting. It is now an association of building engineers (and some architects) that promote the role of engineering in cities and in society as a whole.
