More than 5,000 trees are felled every year in London - and most end their lives as firewood. It’s a terrible waste, given that over 90% of hardwood timber sold in Britain comes from trees grown abroad.

Unable buy English hardwood to make furniture, Londoner Bruce Saunders took matters into his own hands, milling a London plane tree felled in Camden into beautiful hardwood planks. Four years later, his business Saunders Seasonings salvages felled trees from all over the city and has built a customer base of furniture makers and designers who much prefer to use locally sourced, low carbon hardwoods.

Together with his old school friend Patrick Welsh, the pair are determined to give more fallen trees a second life, helping to combat climate change and stimulate a vibrant ‘circular economy’ to enable reinvestment into London’s urban forest.
