To celebrate the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF AFRO-LATIN AMERICAN, AFRO-CARIBBEAN AND DIASPORA WOMEN and Brazil’s NATIONAL TEREZA BENGUELA DAY (in homage of the woman who led a maroon in the 18th century, becoming an icon of Black resistance in colonial Brazil), both observed on the 25th of July, Helena Solberg Cineclub will screen a selection of some of the most captivating and cutting-edge short films recently directed by young Black Brazilian women filmmakers.
From KBELA (Yasmin Thayná, 2015), a seismic film that is undoubtedly one of the most powerful and influential Brazilian audio-visual pieces from the 2010s, to NOIRBLUE – DISPLACEMENTS OF A DANCE (Ana Pi, 2018), a transatlantic dance approaching issues such as ancestry and belonging. From WINGLESS (Renata Martins, 2019) to DISPLACEMENTS, HEAVEN AND CHAOS (Tila Chitunda, 2020), two different narrative proposals – but both equally poignant – on racism and state violence against the Black population (among other themes). And CROSSING (Safira Moreira, 2017), an intimate and poetic essay that, in only five minutes, encapsulates a myriad of topics including memory, image, archiving and representation. Serving as inspiration for the evening of screenings’ name, the idea of “crossings” aims to spark multiple possibilities: matches and mismatches, bridges and obstructions, struggles and joys of all journeys.
