Paying tribute to, and celebrating, Black History Month, the Helena Solberg Cineclub screens, in October, the legendary documentary ÔRÍ, an overall look at the history of Black movements in Brazil, as well as a poetic take on activist and intellectual Beatriz Nascimento’s personal and political searches.
Led by Nascimento’s voice and life, ÔRÍ depicts Black organisations and events (samba school gatherings, soul music nights, conferences at a university, religious ceremonies) held mainly in São Paulo in the 1970s and 1980s. At the same time, it is also an attempt to shed new light on the history of Black people and their transatlantic connections and continuities.
