The Helena Solberg Cineclub November programme will be a special event comprising of two episodes of the gripping documentary series THE SILENCE THAT SINGS FOR FREEDOM, Úrsula Corona, 2022, Brazil), focusing on the harmful effects of the military dictatorship on Brazilian music and gathering interviews with renowned composers, journalists and artists – including prominent figures such as Moraes Moreira (1947-2020), Gal Costa (1945-2022), Gilberto Gil, and the notable poet and composer José Carlos Capinan. These artists were pillars of Tropicália, an artistic movement that emerged in the 1960s during the dictatorship era, noted for its political intervention through a discography that challenged the prevailing reality.
This UK premiere presenting two episodes of the series will be followed by an in-person Q&A with the director Úrsula Corona and the producer Omar Marzagão.
