Victoria Cooper, Associate at architecture and interior design practice Buckley Gray Yeoman will present 77 Coleman - the comprehensive redevelopment of an existing building that fronts onto two major thoroughfares within the City of London. Victoria's presentation will examine the challenges of reconfiguring the existing building, such as dramatically altering the two main facades of the existing building despite limitations imposed by the existing structural frame, to create a building that feels new and now sits as an elegant and subtle composition within a dense cluster of office buildings.
Buckley Gray Yeoman's key moves were to (1) Open up Nun Court to create a new pedestrian route and retail frontage through the city block, connecting Moorgate and Coleman Street, (2) Add two new floors of high-quality office spaces with views out to The City from new terraces, (3) Replace three facades to create a new signature building overlooking Coleman Street Gardens and (4) Create a destination entrance space with cafe and lounge seating that sets the tone for the building.
Acknowledging the tradition of small hidden passageways throughout the City of London, the alterations to Nun Court improve cross-site permeability through the public realm and allows for the creation of 95ft of retail frontage which comprises 16,000 sqft of retail space. A generous 3,200 sqft reception space for the main offices reflects the high-quality finishes throughout the building, with the use of reeded glass referencing the history of the site - where a glass-making factory once stood - and a existing coffered ceiling left exposed to celebrate the existing structural form.
