Semi-detached housing is often mocked as quaint and outmoded, yet it accounts for over 10% of London’s homes and has remained enormously popular in the capital’s suburban areas. What has made this unfashionable form of housing so enduringly successful? And does it have a brighter future than is generally assumed?

Andrew Beharrell, former Senior Partner at Pollard Thomas Edwards, will talk about origins and perceptions of the semi, what makes them successful and how we might tackle their deficiencies. He contrasts incremental change with the large-scale densification of suburban town centres.

The London Society

About The Society is for all those who love London. It was founded in 1912 by a group of influential Londoners concerned about the lack of planning for the future of the capital. Early members included architects, planners and engineers alongside politicians and artists. They came from a range of backgrounds and many would go on to shape Britain during the century that followed. The Society's motto is - Valuing the past; looking to the future!
