The management of air through and around medical buildings has been of concern since the Romans located their hospital on an island in the River Tiber.

In the fourth session of our seminar series on Spaces of Sickness and Wellbeing, Alistair Fair brings together eminent scholars addressing this topic that has become central to our lives in 2020-21.

Papers will discuss: the history of infection control; airborne infection transmission; air & infection in the C19th and waterbath modelling of air in hospital wards.

About SAHGB brings together all those with an interest in the history of the built environment – academics, architects, heritage experts and the wider public. We believe that appreciation of architectural history plays a vital role in understanding our culture, past and present. With the help of our members, we publish new research, organise a range of events, provide educational opportunities and advance the understanding of the built histories of all periods and places, in Britain and beyond.
