The Translating Ferro/Transforming Knowledges Project – in collaboration with Central St Martins Spatial Practices - is thrilled to present a new lecture by Sérgio Ferro in his first appearance in the UK, introducing The Emancipatory Building Site.
Join us online for this ground-breaking talk, hosted and chaired by members of the TF/TK team; Silke Kapp (Federal University of Minas Gerais); José Lira (University of São Paulo); João Marcos de Almeida Lopes, IAU-USP; Katie Lloyd Thomas (Newcastle University) with a live Q&A with Sérgio Ferro.

The Brazilian born architect and painter Sérgio Ferro was a professor of architecture and art history at the Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo of the Universidade de São Paulo (1962–1970) and then at the École d'architecture de Grenoble (1972–2003) and a member of Arquitetura Nova. His experimental practice, historical research and critical theory, based on Marx, is central for the new field of production studies in architecture, art and design.
In this lecture Ferro will discuss The Emancipatory Building Site, an experimental building site that aims at emancipation and real social needs requires a course of action involving three basic dimensions:
1) drawing on what is available to us today in the field of building;
2) deepening the theoretical and practical critique of the current mode of production as it manifests itself in this field;
3) concretely experimenting with the possibilities of emancipatory practices.
Translating Ferro / Transforming Knowledges of architecture design and labour for the new field of Production Studies’ (TF/TK) is a 4-year project funded by the AHRC and FAPESP and led by researchers at Newcastle University and USP São Carlos, with the aim of defining and consolidating a new field of Production Studies, structured and informed by the work of Brazilian architect and theorist Sérgio Ferro.
