A wonderfully varied section of the Capital Ring. Including the Olympic Park, Bazalgette's 'Cathedral of Sewage' and the River Lea.
Starting at Hackney Wick and finishing at Beckton District Park (Royal Albert DLR) this is a wonderfully varied section of the Capital Ring. We'll have great views of the Olympic Park from an elevated path and our route takes us close to the London Stadium - home of the Olympics and West Ham FC. We will walk alongside the River Lea Navigation and past the old Lock Keeper's Cottage where we join the River Lea and then we'll walk on top of one of the original London Sewers built by the great engineer Joseph Bazalgette and we'll pass the beautiful pumping station that he designed at Abbey Mills. Near Plaistow we will see part of London's flood defence system, the Barking Creek Floor Barrier which is 3 miles long. Our walk finishes with an interesting tree trail - keen arboriculturalists may want to see how many of the species they can identify.
The walk is mainly level on surfaced paths but iincludes a few fairly steep slopes. It will take approximately 3 hours. Distance: 5 miles.
Meets at Hackney Wick overground Station (outside station on Wallis Road). You can check travel options at the Transport for London Journey Planner.
