At the top of the Isle of Dogs, the Canary Wharf Estate has always been distinctly apart from the rest of the ‘island'. Publicly accessible but privately owned, Canary Wharf was built for commerce, as London's industrial docks were replaced by the 1980’s financial services industry. This newly developed part of the city was like a mini-Manhattan, with more in common to other financial districts than its locality. Forty years on and the urban realm is now much more established.

Join photographer and educator Anthony Palmer on this walking tour to discover the historically interesting as well as architecturally impressive, the infrastructure from Docklands Light Rail to Crossrail and the new residential developments that have begun to build a Canary Wharf sense of community.

Meeting point: Poplar DLR station (E14 0BG), high-level concourse looking towards Canary Wharf.
