John McKean and Alice Grahame will talk about the work of Walter Segal (1907-1985) who grew up in Berlin and moved to London in 1936. They will discuss his early work and the later self-build timber framed houses he designed with many built in London, and also the movement to which he gave his name. Their book 'Walter Segal: Self-Built Architect' was published in June by Lund Humphries.
Elain Harwood will introduce the lecture and also cover the history of the protection of Segal’s buildings and the lack of listing protection to date.
John McKean is an architect, architectural historian, author and critic.
Alice Grahame is a journalist formerly of the BBC and has written for The Guardian.
