It’s a space that inspired art. It is where dreams were forged and broken. It is where superstition influenced those who tunnelled under the River Thames. It was demonised by the Church and marvelled at by tourists in equal measure.

Whilst we know more about the work of Marc & Isambard Kingdom Brunel, what of those who physically built it? What of the partners, wives, and children of those who risked their lives? How did this all affect the port of Rotherhithe? Led by public historian Sheldon K. Goodman, this walking tour for the Brunel Museum seeks to highlight the lives, stories and social histories connected to those who built one of the great engineering innovations of the 19th century. From the beliefs and folklore that were held by the miners to the interest from actors and the Duke of Wellington: this is an amazing insight into the social history the story has left on London today.
